AnnMarie Brennan

Student Choice Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Student Choice Award for Excellence in Teaching is open to all staff and voted on by students. It is awarded to AnnMarie Brennan. The following citation includes comments provided by students.

The award recognises AnnMarie’s longstanding support for the Inflection journal of the Melbourne School of Design. She has served as Academic Advisor to student editors over the past 10 years and 10 volumes. Her contributions have included engagement of student editors, refereeing disputes, editorial guidance, and promotion of the journal itself. She has arranged for the journal to be indexed, distributed internationally and transferred to an online e-book version.  The journal has twice been awarded the Bates Smart Award for Architectural Media (Victoria). This project has created a community of alumni editors and sub-editors who come together each year for the launch of a new issue.

Student comments include the following:

Inflection could never have existed without AnnMarie's early advocacy - by the same token, it would surely have fallen out of production years ago without her ongoing, long-term stewardship of the project, and commitment to fostering the agency of a small yet gritty group of students.

For some, editing the journal may seem outside our comfort zone, however it pays back in soft skills, hard skills, team/networking opportunities and CV clout. I am so grateful for our steadfast and sharp-eyed supervisor ...

AnnMarie Brennan’s impact on my architectural education cannot be overstated … Her unwavering support of Inflection Journal has cemented a love for knowledge, writing and a rigour which has served me very well in professional practice.

Inflection provides a valuable platform for students to collect a range of built environment voices in response to contemporary discourse. A major aspect has been Dr B’s time and effort, showcasing how the school can meaningfully engage with students’ ideas and a bottom-up approach to education.

Congratulations Ann Marie !
