The Japanese Garden

The Japanese Garden was a tsubo-niwa or courtyard garden of irregular shape. Dating back to the Fifteenth Century, when merchants would create gardens in the open spaces between their houses and storage buildings.

By relocating the Garden adjacent to the Japanese Room students and visitors to the new building are able to see at first hand the important relationship between Japanese interior and exterior spaces.
