A Crack in the System sets a new precedent in mental illness facilities to completely change the existing atmosphere of mental illness treatment. By beginning to deviate from the physical atmospheres of existing mental illness facilities, the negative connotations and stigmas associated with mental illness treatment will then slowly start to fade. Using large, sculptural forms to create protective embraces below them, yet also provide a refreshing platform above surrounded by greenery, these atmospheres seek to embrace the user, and encourage them to accept themselves. The weight these sculptures represent and carry are both the burdens of the user that they aim to let go, yet also remind them of the journey that they have gone through, and remind us of the seriousness of mental illness. Hence, this will be the Crack in the System that will allow them to heal, grow and flourish.
