Melbourne Surveillance Museum

The Melbourne Surveillance Museum provides a space to showcase artworks and exhibitions and at the same time encourage discussion around the growing power of surveillance in our everyday lives. The museum is deliberately intended to stand out as a spectacle amongst the traditionally “Melbourne” suburb of Carlton, whilst maintaining a strong sense of secrecy and power through its external façade. Amidst the heart of a retail and hospitality hotspot, the museum becomes a physical manifestation that demonstrates how deeply authority-driven surveillance is integrated into our everyday lives. Once inside the museum, the visitor follows a journey that provides an alternative experience to a traditional museum. The special galleries focus on the idea of personal identity, involving the visitors themselves in the making and presentation of displays using interactive installations. The main galleries showcase a collection of artworks and installations that explore how modern surveillance has transformed from the 20th century, its growing power today, and how it might impact our lives in the future. Spaces are carefully controlled and designed to focus on the circulation of the visitor, tracking all movement and allowing them to process the enormity of the phenomenon that is surveillance whilst better coming to terms with their own identity as their journey ends.
