The Site

So what is this all about?

Foregoing its vibrant heritage, Queen Victoria Market has seen a decline in recent years with facilities becoming dated and the program of the spaces shifting into a modern era. This needed refresh of the precinct will involve a refurbishment of existing historical buildings such as the revered market sheds alongside an overhaul of the Queen Street and southern car park areas. This project will focus solely on the Queen Street “Market Cross” in an effort to seek a better solution than the current bitumen strip that divides the market precinct with rows of parked cars and ticket machines.

Initial Concept

The focus of the design:
Throughout the years, Queen Street has served as an amenity for access and parking to the markets. Whilst proving to be extremely useful, with greater public transport available and more patrons entering by foot, the “Market Cross” area has become a cold transition between the two bubbling market areas.
Through investigating this space, I endeavour to create a design that can give back to the patrons and place rather than detracting from it.
