Queen Victoria Market plays an important role in Melbourne’s social and cultural fabric. It’s function as a market is integral to this importance. However, with population density increasing in Melbourne’s CBD, and with the shift to online grocery shopping, some things need to change.

I propose that additional programs be implemented, and that the Market Cross becomes a car free zone, to enhance the useability and pedestrian access of the market. The additional programs include; a community garden/ agriculture precinct, partnered with green open space and ample seating to complement the existing market setting, to revive the experience and make it more sustainable.

The market’s shed structure plays a key part in QVM’s architecture heritage listing, so by extending these structures to create a pedestrian canopy, a threshold space is created between the existing market and the proposed market changes.
