Many artists identify as introverts and work more effectively alone. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic we have also been forced to isolate, where, as humans, we naturally crave social interaction and a connection to the outdoors.

The housing project for visual artists seeks to achieve a balance between privacy and social interaction, exploring how we can be together, apart, whilst also balancing built form and open outdoor space in the suburbs.

A courtyard typology allows for a central shared space that can be used for casual private gatherings or as an open-air gallery and event space, where individual homes act as a gallery themselves, separating yet blending live-work space. Studios open up to the courtyard, whilst all other windows turn away from the courtyard, to create privacy to the courtyard and between homes.
Blade walls of recycled bagged brick further provide a sense of privacy and assist with shading.
