MSD students featured in National Museum of Australia exhibition

Work produced by students as part of the Digital Design and Fabrication Electives at the Melbourne School of Design is featured in the new exhibition Material World, opening tomorrow at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.

The exhibition explores the history and complexity of human design, showcasing traditional and new technologies through objects made from a range of materials including glass, ceramics and wood.

The project Bloom (2022) by Jingyao Lu, Theodore Soerianto and Haotian Wang will be featured in the exhibition along with Skink Sculpture (2022) by Unn Areecharoenlert, Joshua Budgen and Nicolas Reyes Beltran.

The student's work was produced in an MSD elective, R_Lab: Made by Robots, led by Associate Professor Rochus Hinkel. The subject focused on the design and fabrication of habitats for non-human species. Students used robots to 3D print a series of clay objects that were installed along the Darebin Creek at the McGeorge Bequest in Ivanhoe, Victoria. Fabrication is undertaken in the Maker Spaces Robotics Lab, led by Ryan Pennings.

These works and more will be featured in the upcoming exhibition Design Making – Making Design, presented by MSD as part of Melbourne Design Week 2023.
