MSD Design Portfolio Requirements

Please ensure that you meet all the admissions requirements for the program you are applying for and follow the instructions below for design portfolio submission.

The following programs require a design portfolio to be assessed for entry:

  • The Master of Architecture 2 Year (200 point stream) and 3 Year (300 point stream)
  • The Master of Architectural Engineering
  • The Master of Landscape Architecture 2 Year (200 point stream) and 3 Year* (300 point stream)
  • The Master of Urban Design

*Applicable only to students who have completed tertiary study in a design discipline (any) where 25% of study was design studio/project related.

  1. Overall Portfolio Requirements

    The below information is relevant to the following programs only:

    • The Master of Architecture 2 Year (200 point stream)
    • The Master of Architectural Engineering
    • The Master of Landscape Architecture 2 Year (200 point stream) and 3 Year* (300 point stream)
    • The Master of Urban Design

    *Applicable only to students who have completed tertiary study in a design discipline (any) where 25% of study was design studio/project related.

    The overall portfolio requirements are:

    • A maximum number of 20 single pages
    • Saved as one PDF file, in landscape format
    • The file size should not exceed 10 MB
    • Showcase 3 - 4 projects, with preferably 4 pages or more per project
    • Projects must be clearly labelled
    • Imagery should be of high resolution
    • A maximum of 1 professional or work experience project. Unless your undergraduate degree was completed 5 or more years from the date of submission.

    Note: the information and imagery in your portfolio can be depicted in any style or arrangement, we encourage strong creativity.

    Portfolios are evaluated digitally and should be coherent, and easily readable with limited zooming and scrolling.

  2. Overall Portfolio Requirements - Master of Architecture 3 Year (300 point stream)

    The below information is relevant to the 3 Year (300 point stream) of the Master of Architecture only.

    The overall portfolio requirements are:

    • 10 page limit, including a Cover Page with contents
    • 2 projects

    Portfolios should be drawn largely from the design studio subject completed as a prerequisite for entry into the Master of Architecture 3 Year (300 point stream) program. The portfolio should include at least one project produced at university level in a studio learning environment. The second project may be a choice of university, professional, or personal work. Personal work can include creative work such as drawings, sketches, photography etc. that clearly exemplify design skills.

    The Selection Committee look for portfolios that demonstrate sensibilities in design and architectural thinking, exemplifying design skills gained from the ‘design studio’ prerequisite requirement. In addition, the Selection Committee will also look for an awareness of spatial thinking, and evidence of the exploration of 3D objects and spaces.

  3. Additional Supporting Documentation

    In addition to your design portfolio, you must also submit the following supporting documentation with your online application:

    • Academic Transcript/s
    • Personal Statement, if applicable

  5. Submitting your portfolio

    • Portfolios are to be submitted online through SlideRoom.
    • Following completion of your online application you will receive a link to the MSD SlideRoom portal. You will need to set up a SlideRoom account to upload your portfolio.
    • A portfolio submission fee of USD$5 applies, which will need to be paid before your portfolio can be successfully be submitted. You can pay the submission fee using one of the following: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, Discover, Diner’s Club and China Union Pay.

    Your submitted portfolio will be reviewed by the MSD Academic Selection Committee to determine your eligibility for entry into your desired program.

  6. Important Information

    The MSD receives a large volume of applications for our portfolio-based programs per intake, and consequently the application process is highly competitive.

    The assessment process is largely based on the review of the design portfolio and personal statement (if applicable).

    Before you submit your design portfolio please ensure you read and understand the MSD portfolio requirements. You cannot edit your portfolio once it has been submitted.

    To maintain equity and equality in assessment, the MSD Selection Committee:

    • Cannot accept re-submissions for the same course for the same intake
    • Cannot provide individual feedback on your portfolio
    • Cannot re-assess a portfolio once an outcome has been made
