Criteria 2: Timely, Clear and Constructive Feedback

This element refers to various aspects that influence when and how assessment tasks are administered and completed. This encompasses the scheduling, duration, and pacing of assessments. This element also refers to where, when, and how students are supported (‘scaffolded’) to prepare for their assessment and opportunities for formative feedback. Inclusive approaches to assessment timing accommodate diverse student needs and minimise stress during intense assessment periods

UDL Principles

  • Engagement: Flexible timing helps maintain student motivation and reduces anxiety.
  • Representation: Adequate preparation time ensures all students can access and process the information.
  • Action & Expression: Sufficient duration and flexibility allow all students to demonstrate their knowledge effectively.
  • This example provides an overview of how an assessment can be changed to improve clarity and accessibility. It focuses on offering more detailed instructions, multiple formats and examples to help students better understand the task. Additionally, technical terms are defined, and opportunities for seeking clarification are emphasised to ensure all students can engage with the assessment effectively.

    Considerations

Is feedback on assessments provided promptly and staggered to help students improve without overwhelming them?

    Additional Considerations:

How does timely and constructive feedback impact student learning and performance? Does the feedback process allow students to reflect and improve on their work before subsequent assessments?

    Assignment Before Editing:

Assignment Name: Sustainable Building Design Report

    Task Details:

    • Description: Students are required to submit a report on the sustainable design of a building,   including energy efficiency, material selection, and environmental impact. The report should include diagrams, calculations, and a written analysis.
    • Timing: Announced at the beginning of Week 1, due by Week 6.
    • Percentage: 40%

    Issues:

    1. Delayed Feedback: Feedback on the Sustainable Building Design Report is provided three weeks after submission, leaving students with little time to incorporate it into future assignments.
    2. One-Time Feedback: Students receive feedback only once, at the end of the assessment period, which limits their opportunity to improve and refine their work based on instructor input.
    3. Overwhelming Feedback: The feedback provided is extensive and given all at once, which can be overwhelming for students to process and implement effectively.

Assignment Name: Sustainable Building Design Report

    Task Details:

    • Description: Students are required to submit a report on the sustainable design of a building,   including energy efficiency, material selection, and environmental impact. The report should include diagrams, calculations, and a written analysis.
    • Advance Notice: Assignment details and expectations are provided at the end of the previous semester and reiterated in the first class of the current semester.
    • Timing: Announced at the end of the previous semester, with staggered submission parts (initial draft due   Week 4, final report due Week 8).
    • Percentage: 40%

    Changes Implemented:

    1. Prompt Feedback: Initial feedback is provided within one week of the draft submission, allowing students to make timely improvements.
    2. Staggered Feedback: Feedback is given in stages: initial feedback on the draft report (Week 5), followed by additional feedback on the final submission (Week 9). This approach helps students gradually incorporate feedback without feeling overwhelmed.
    3. Constructive and Actionable Feedback: Feedback is detailed and constructive, focusing on specific areas for improvement and providing clear, actionable steps that students can take to enhance their work.

    Improvements:

    1. Timely Improvement Opportunities: Providing prompt feedback on the draft submission allows students to make necessary changes and improvements before the final submission, enhancing the overall quality of their work.
    2. Reduced Overwhelm: Staggered feedback helps students manage and process the feedback more effectively, preventing them from feeling overwhelmed by extensive comments all at once.
    3. Enhanced Learning and Performance: Constructive and actionable feedback guides students in their learning process, helping them understand their strengths and areas for improvement, leading to better performance in subsequent assessments.
    4. Continuous Learning and Reflection: The staggered feedback process encourages continuous learning and reflection, enabling students to apply feedback progressively and improve over time.
  • This example demonstrates how feedback can be structured to support continuous learning and improvement. By providing prompt, staggered, and actionable feedback, students have the opportunity to make timely improvements and reflect on their progress throughout the assignment. The revised approach reduces overwhelm by breaking feedback into manageable stages and encourages students to apply feedback progressively, leading to better performance and deeper learning.

    Assignment Before Editing:

    Assignment Name: Urban Design Proposal

    Task Details:

    • Description: Students are required to develop a comprehensive urban design proposal for a designated area, including site analysis, design concepts, and implementation strategies. The proposal should be presented in a written report with supporting maps and diagrams.
    • Timing: Announced at the beginning of Week 1, due by Week 6.
    • Percentage: 50%

    Issues:

    1. Delayed Feedback: Feedback is provided three weeks after submission, which is too late for students to incorporate it into future assignments effectively.
    2. General Feedback: Feedback tends to be broad and generic, lacking specific, actionable points that students can use to improve their work.
    3. Overwhelming Feedback: All feedback is given at once, making it difficult for students to digest and apply the comments effectively.
