X_Carbon is one of two integrated Design Studios which will examine how conventional engineering and architecture disciplines integrate throughout the design process with the aim to explore new ways that might facilitate better design outcomes. Integrated design is the synthesis of architecture and engineering in a collaborative design led approach without traditional discipline hierarchy.

Through the education program lens, students will learn to adapt, reuse and test new spatial configurations through the amalgamation of existing and new building fabric over a full building life cycle. You will be exposed to state-of-the-art research from the LEARN research hub as well as other specialists in education design. The studios will contain a renewable focus and include a research agenda that aims to change current paradigms around how architecture and engineering interact. The studios will include a select number of students from Melbourne School of Engineering (MSE).

You will be exposed to real industry experts to guide your research and design led thinking of how building performance directly relates to its occupants. This studio will explore themes of how education buildings need to adapt to meet emerging challenges around learning environments, technology and the climate and question what legacy architects and engineers can contribute through integrated design story telling?
