Sound in Performance

Coordinators: Peter Farnan and John Ford

Sound is capable of communicating ideas in different ways to visual elements in a design for performance. This subject explores the way sound is used as an artistic medium in the development of a performance. Applications of sound and music are integral to performance environments. Students are introduced to sound in performance through a range of media and practices such as film, opera, music theatre, dance, and other performance forms, and how sound interacts with the other design elements.

We examine the nature and constituent elements of sound, its acoustic properties and the history of sound in Western theatre practice. We explore the interaction between sound, space, performer, light and audience.
