Located on Level One, the Brian Lewis Atrium is a magnificent indoor plaza, the ‘heart’ of our new home.
It is a theatrical and collaborative space which represents the centrality of studio teaching in the Melbourne School of Design’s academic approach. The Atrium, with its bespoke seating and work areas, is a destination in itself, not just a transit area.
Level 1's Landmarks
-
Brian Lewis Atrium
The Atrium is a breath-taking plaza. It was designed as a key focus of our community of learning, combining many functions in a single large space.
-
East Window
The large window to the east can be opened fully to improve the thermal performance of the atrium and minimise artificial cooling.
-
Design Studios
The MSD building is home to 33 studio spaces. Many of our studios are named for our supporters.
-
Hansen Yuncken Suspended Studios
The Hansen Yuncken Suspended Studios are a focal point of the Atrium. This unique structure holds three levels of studio spaces and the external surface features perforated plywood panels.
-
Y Stair
As you walk up through the building, you will have noticed that the stairs are designed using different dimensions. Which ones feel best to walk up and down?
