Ex_Lab encourages students to re-examine everyday materials and invent new ones. Students exemplify how the constraints of materials and making processes can be manipulated and used to the designer’s advantage, driving the design process to result in creating an innovative, aesthetic, and functional object.
This semester students focused on re-cycling, re-use and upcycling materials from food waste, industrial production, or building construction to design artefacts related to the human body. Through a process of re-thinking and re-examining materials and their applications students re-envisage new applications related to bodies resting on crafted objects. The designed and fabricated pieces of furniture are outcomes of a process of experimentation and research with both fabrication techniques and materials.
