R_Lab Made by Robots

Subject Leader: Associate Professor Rochus Hinkel

R_Lab is a design-research based elective that explores the potential of robotic 3D clay printing for the fabrication of non-human habitats. Students undertake research to develop an understanding for the needs and conditions of non-human species, focused on a species of their choice. Students then design and fabricate these habitats and install them along the Darebin Creek, close to the Birrarung / Yarra River to observe them over time. This elective allows students to develop non-standard objects and structures of infinite variability, creating novel design possibilities. This subject also involves cross-disciplinary collaboration including researchers from ecology, bioscience, philosophy and urban horticulture.

Outcomes from this elective have been selected for the Material World exhibition at the Australian National Museum in Canberra in 2023.
