Planning for Healthy Waterways

Studio E explores the role of urban planning and design in supporting healthy urban waterways and creating livable neighborhoods. The studio will engage students to consider Integrated Water Management (IWM), place based planning and urban design to propose spatial strategies for the creation of a mixed-use urban precinct, adjacent to Merri Creek in Northcote. These strategies will be considerate of planning provisions and policy frameworks as well as the health of an environmentally and culturally significant natural waterway. Students will learn to use effective Water Sensitive Urban Design strategies, spatial ecologies, and well planned landscapes and spaces to account for riparian health and livability simultaneously. Potential interventions will be mindful of the surrounding neighborhood, with consideration of economic, social and environmental outcomes.

The studio will enable the students to work closely with planners from local and state government as well as designers from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), City of Moreland, City of Darebin, and the Merri Creek Management Committee (MCMC). Students will conduct site analysis considering the environmental and social context, including relevant planning controls and policies. They will use urban design and spatial ecological theories to develop new design visions for the site.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this studio, students should be able to:

  • engage critically with environmental planning issues, and identify challenges and opportunities in current frameworks to facilitate Integrated Water Management for a given site and its broader context;
  • propose creative solutions to environmental planning issues;
  • develop effective and clear visual and textual communication skills including mapping.
