Kristen Wang

This studio is available to students enrolled in ABPL90142 Studio C, ABPL90143 Studio D, and ABPL90115 Studio E.  This studio is co-taught with CVEN90073 Integrated Design Studio.

Studio Description

Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach are three coastal suburbs located about 30 km south-east from Melbourne's central business district. As part of the government’s $3 billion Level Removal Project (LXRP) along the Melbourne Frankston train line, Studio CONNECT takes this opportunity to investigate further about architectural and engineering integration to the forefront of design and mobility in the 21st century.

Students are challenged to propose new local train stations to improve the infrastructure of Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach precincts with the aims

  • To connect central Melbourne and Mornington Peninsula
  • To connect urban and landscape
  • To connect future development and historic background
  • To connect the human and the built environment

Students will also be asked to consider and design for different speeds of transportation mode and hence their different types of connectivity from a bottom-up design approach.

Studio Outcomes

Running in the Integrated Design Studio (IDS) format, students will have an oppurntity of learning to design collaboratively with other disciplines across different scales from urban to architectural details and to establish a rigorous design process as aligning with architecture practice.

A number of presentations and workshops will be carried out throughout the semester by both Cox Architecture and professional consultants (landscape architects, engineers, clients, etc.) to bring students with more insightful expertise to their design projects of train stations.

During the first half of the semester, students will undertake a variety of site analysis and studies on the urban and social-cultural fabric of Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach to establish their conceptual positions of the found issue(s). In the second phase, students in groups will choose one station to develop their design proposals iteratively as shaped by their early investigations and consultant inputs.
