How to apply

Please log into Sonia (the University's internship tool) and click on Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning.
The ‘Home’ tab contains a step-by-step guide, plus additional resources to help you find a suitable host organisation.

• SONIA - Login to web and app

In the ‘Internships’ tab, find your subject’s internship group (e.g. 2025 ABP Internship Applications) select ‘+ Join’ then ‘Create’ to ensure the correct forms become available.

• SONIA - Create an internship

First, search for your host organisation in the list, if it doesn’t appear, open the 'Forms' tab to locate the ABP Host Organisation Request form. After submitting your host information, admin will review (allow 5 business days).

• SONIA - Submit a new host organisation

Once your host organisation is selected/added, complete 2025 ABP Internship Application form. This form will be reviewed by admin, once approved and the subject coordinator.

The faculty will prepare either a Vocational Placement Letter Agreement (VPLA) for an unpaid internship or a Professional Placement Letter Agreement (PPLA) for a paid internship. These legal agreements are between the University of Melbourne and the host organisation and must be signed before commencement of the internship.

Once all the above steps have been completed and you have received email permission from the ABPL90434 Subject Coordinator Paulo Vaz-Serra, please go to enrolment changes to upload Paulo’s email approval and complete the Enrolment Assistance (EA) form.

It is your responsibility to ensure you are enrolled in the correct study period so that you will have access to CANVAS.

Please do not be put off by the multiple steps involved for this subject. They are necessary for the university to have all the correct information to ensure that you will be insured during your placement.
