This studio is available to students enrolled in ABPL90142 Studio C, ABPL90143 Studio D, and ABPL90115 Studio E.
Studio Description
This is a studio where each student develops various strategies of designing space and form through a series of design techniques and operations while at the same time looking at various urban morphologies in order to propose a Contemporary gallery for the rear of the NGV Melbourne. There shall be class investigations and explorations over the semester and address some theoretical and formal concerns for the gallery typology. The concept behind this studio is to design a building which investigates the changing nature of architectural surface and space in the modern world, particularly as it has changed since the influence of conceptual art and the advent of the cinema, television and screen technologies (and video art). The project is an opportunity to explore new artistic techniques and methodologies for generating buildings, while aiming at a very clear output for a functional contemporary gallery / public building. The NGV_C brief includes The elevated Pedestrian Promenade for sculpture, installation contemporary performance and green space. The gallery building shall include - Internal Gallery spaces, Gallery Gift Shops and café, public foyers and members lounge (a more specific brief shall be developed in class. Art Assembly Workshops including Archive storage areas. The studio shall explore the changing nature of the architectural surface and space in the modern world. Particularly as it has changed since the influence of contemporary and conceptual art, digital screen technologies. The project is an opportunity to explore new creative techniques and methodologies for generating this civic building The studio shall explore via Design iteration, Group Research and active discussions via digital presentations, 3d and physical Model making. The areas we shall focus on include design approaches and processes, relevant readings and research, Site investigations, Brief and program requirements, Material and structural investigations including ESD issues and precedents in design We also aim to produce a very clear and developed output for this building type while also acknowledging the urban context, site history and the designer’s process and intent for the architecture.
Studio Outcome
The students shall develop a sound understanding of different spatial techniques designers adopt and how these may communicate ideas and concepts through architectural design. These studies shall be fostered and developed by each student after conducting site and brief investigations in order to establish a particular design process. The studio shall work in class through class discussions, lectures, and exercises adopting different medium which shall include: mapping exercises, and various model making exercises (physical and digital -Rhino etc). All activities shall be work towards a final professional folio / booklet documenting the work in a professional manner including a final presentation layout with 3 d models which will explore various graphic techniques adopted by architects and designers in addition to a developed verbal and written design statement.
Studio Leaders
Anna Nervegna is a director of the award winning practice Nervegna Reed Architecture. The firms architecture has been widely published includes projects in Australia and China. In addition to their commitment to higher education Nervegna Reed also works at the intersection of architecture, media and art such as their 2018 screening of films for the Mpavilion. Anna’s art practice has been awarded by the Australia Council and the Gertrude Contemporary Art Studio Program where are was also a board member. www.n-r.com.au
