A Machine for Living Well: Residential Design for 2020 & Beyond

Marnie Morieson

This studio is available to students enrolled in ABPL90142 Studio C, ABPL90143 Studio D, and ABPL90115 Studio E.

Studio Description

In the past 40 years, Australian society has undergone rapid social, technological and environmental change, yet the bulk of residential house design in Australia remains persistently conservative and non-adaptive. Family structure has transformed from the mono-nuclear to a diverse array of combinations while technological developments have altered the nature and sites of work, and our modes of communication: eroding personal privacy via transactions of information or good for personal data. Against this backdrop, scientific consensus warns of increased incidence of severe weather conditions, water level rises, impacts on air and water quality as well as food production and access to clean water.

This studio explores how residential design might respond to one or more of these cultural transformations and welcomes critical and speculative responses.

Studio Outcome

The studio will be comprised of three stages:

Part A | - Toolbox - 3 weeks Students will critically examine selected Modernist works, Italian Radical propositions, speculative designs and contemporary projects, together with selected readings, and present a visual “toolbox” of strategies for responding to contemporary issues through the medium of residential design. Parallel to this, students will be asked to reflect on current issues via written and visual analysis.

Part B | Developing the brief - 2 weeks Students will be required to develop a set of strategies, brief and site that addresses an issues or set of issues identified in Part One.

Part C | Major Project Students will be required to develop their strategies into a coherent project that demonstrates a conceptual clarity and a high level of resolution.
