Joel Benichou | CITIES + LIVING

This studio is available to students enrolled in ABPL90142 Studio C, ABPL90143 Studio D, and ABPL90115 Studio E.
Studio Description
The topic of housing in Australia regularly sparks strong discussion. A desire exists amongst homeowners to live close to the attractions of the city, whilst holding on to the benefits of the suburban lifestyle. This inexhaustible demand for land and housing has led to prices of the inner suburbs reaching record levels, while the cheaper alternatives continue to sprawl further into the outer reaches of the city.
Exploration into the inefficiencies of our suburbs is required to provide new options for the demands and preferences of the wider community. Studio FUTURE HOUSE, in the context of the Future Homes Student Competition run by IBA Melbourne in partnership with The Department of Environment Land Water and Planning and the Office of the Victorian Government Architect, will consider notions of compact living in real world conditions. We will explore the issues of urban sprawl, housing affordability, change in demographic and adaptation to the new world of technology and globalisation.
Studio Outcome
Students of Studio 16 – Future House will be preparing submissions for the Future Homes Student Competition due in November 2020. You will be asked to prepare exemplar designs for mid-scale housing buildings that will be replicable in suburban Melbourne environments. The competition is intended to generate scalable and replicable designs for apartment buildings that are great homes, create great neighbours and facilitate great citizens. It aims to encourage increased housing diversity, through the creation of homes that are world leading in their design quality, sustainability and liveability.
The first half of semester will be spent preparing a conceptual design response in relation to the competition brief. The second half of semester will see students further develop their submissions, adapting them to an allocated suburban site in Melbourne. A range of webinars, technical workshops and industry expertise and guidance will be available throughout semester and at $10,000 prize pool is available to the top three winning entries.
