Studio C/14

Use-less

Jacqui Nguyen

Studio Description

Use-less is a studio that focuses on material exploration, connection with the land and designing for people and the planet.

The site for this studio is Brunswick Market, located on Sydney Road right by Anstey Station and the Upfield Bike Path, just south of Albion Street. Currently, the building is rundown and earmarked for a large multi-residential development with commercial tenancies on the lower levels, one of many in Brunswick. this is our opportunity to reimagine what this space could be and question if we should take a “build less, give more” approach.

With that in mind, students are asked to use only the materials found on site to design a space that brings people together to connect with one another and with the land on which they occupy. Brick, concrete, and steel – a simple and honest palette, reminiscent of Brunswick’s the industrial history.

Studio Outcomes

During the first half of the semester, we will work together to research the history of the site and its surrounding context, as well as survey and study the local people in order to understand who they are and how they will use the space. We will visit the site, assess the existing materials and develop new and innovative ways to give these materials a second life. The information that we, as a studio, gather about people and place will inform your brief and drive your design during the second half of the semester.

Students are encouraged to explore different mediums to express their ideas throughout the design process such as drawing, model making, photography, videography and soundscapes.

The aim is for students to strengthen their skills in forming design narratives, confidence in presenting their ideas, knowledge in research methods and material exploration.
