Studio Description

What is the symbiosis of new and old?

Where will history and memories go? When a building carrying countless memories and cultural history begins its life again today, how will we, as designers, treat it? The development of a city is based on its history and the stories of its continuous life. Most of the places where these stories take place lie in buildings. When people use buildings, these histories are formed day by day. There are many sources available for what it means to reuse an old building, such as the inheritance of a building's history as a culture, or the continuation of a building's historical features, or the redefinition of a building's functionality.

In modern society, people have been hotly discussing the importance of sustainable development to a city, however, what does sustainable development mean to architectural design? Is it just the use and renewal of building materials and technology? The specific form of the building and the detailed use of materials are only one branch of this definition. In a broader sense, sustainability's use of an old building goes far beyond these visible methodologies. In this project we will work together to explore the origins beyond the definition of this category, at the end of the semester, students will find answers that they have never seen through this semester's investigation and research and design exploration.

Studio Outcomes

The exploration process will combine thesis writing and architecture design. In this design course, students will have the freedom to make their own choices to select the buildings and sites they will transform and bring back to life, the location of the building is mainly located in the centre of Melbourne, students can choose based on their interests in urban history and humanities background. From micro to macro choices of building materials to building function, students can make their own judgments based on their own redefinition of the architectural site and the re-giving of architectural life. In this process of exploration, architectural design methodologies will be encouraged to go beyond your design techniques and aesthetics experience. Rather, it is an exploration from a more macro perspective about what role architecture can play in future world.
