Design Techniques

Bonnie Gordon

Studio Description

This subject is the first studio in the 300-point Master of Landscape Architecture, introducing approaches and techniques for thinking about, exploring, and making in landscape design. A selection of techniques for design generation and representation will be introduced, including graphic analysis, sketching, physical modelling, and 3-D digital modelling. Students will develop skills in site investigation, generative design techniques, and graphic communication conventions, alongside an introduction to landscape architecture theory and conceptual framing for design.

Studio Outcomes

The studio focuses on design explorations on a selected site within Melbourne. Through processes of investigating and designing the site, students are introduced to critical landscape influences and contextual issues including ecology, culture, public space, and urbanism. Students will interrogate these thematics and explore a range of techniques for generating new spatial landforms. At the end of the subject, students will be able to;

  • Apply a range of design processes, skills and techniques for exploring landscape sites and generating designed    outcomes.
  • Apply representational skills, with an emphasis on digital media.
  • Understand design as a process.
  • Have an emerging understanding of the scope and characteristics of contemporary landscape architecture.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem solving to the issues of designing landscape
