Studio 3/02

Landscape Studio 3 Speculations:
Sunbury

Naomi Barun

Studio Description

Studio 3/02 will explore the site and surrounds of the historic Sunbury asylum. This facility was operational between 1879 and 1985. Since then, the building and grounds have been used as community facilities, education, and training. This studio will explore designing with the unique features of this site as an important piece of community open space which is embedded with rich stories and history. Important to this studio offering, the design project will speculate on the imagined future uses, and potential new contributions for the Sunbury community.

Studio Outcomes

Assignment One: Site. Through creative exploratory techniques informed by theory, students will document and spatialise site conditions. Attention will be paid to the communities and longer histories of place.

Assignment two: Mid-semester. Working with their site explorations, along with the consideration of key theory and international design precedents, students will explore propositions for a contemporary open space.

Assignment three: Major design project. Drawing on design potentials emerging from Assignment 1 and 2, the final assignment challenges students to develop their proposition in terms of materiality, scale, experience, and inhabitation. Careful attention will be paid to the graphic representation of form, spatial qualities, time, and experience in design outcomes.
