MUP Studio
Studio N
Michele Acuto and Anna Edwards
Studio Description
Around 1-in-9 employees work night shifts, often in low pay and precarious health conditions. Several cities have recognised this with the recent introduction of night time strategies, pilot programs, night time commissions, even ‘night mayors’ – not least in London, Amsterdam or indeed Melbourne. This studio focuses on ‘night time’ design, governance and policy for built environment practitioners and offers a venue to further refine interdisciplinary and policy-relevant understanding of urban planning, urban design and architecture at night time for scholarly and professional careers.
Studio Outcomes
Studio participants will work directly with practitioners to review the state and challenges for night work spaces design, planning and policy. They will contribute individual work focused on chosen night time economy spaces, as well as a collective exhibition on night shift spaces and a virtual ‘walkthrough’ gallery where individual student work will be exhibited.
Studio Leaders
Michele Acuto and Anna Edwards are both at the Melbourne Centre for Cities, where they work on the Australian Research Council’s Night Shift research program with Australian cities across the country. Anna has an extensive experience of consultancy to major Australian cities in data and night-time economy, and Michele has advised numerous cities on night time design and planning, and currently serves on the City of Melbourne’s Night time Economy Advisory Committee.
