Semester 2 2017 Studio 10

The Lotus Pavilion

Qinghua Guo
Studio 10

Studio Outline:

In this studio students will design a pavilion and a gate for the Buddhist Discussion Centre Australia. The address is 33 Brooking Street, Upwey, Victoria 3158. The new pavilion will accommodate a traditional two-metre Buddha statue, which is to be designed in a style that reflects Asian Buddhist temple architectural heritage. The new building (c. 18 sq. m) will be the centrepiece of the centre in the garden which is used for ceremonial events and as a meditation space. The project requires a ‘master plan’ to rearrange the existing structures within the garden to achieve a harmonious and practical integration.

The centre will offer three prizes, $500, $300, $200, to the designs to acknowledge and commend for excellence.

The site work is anticipated to commence in late 2017, with the project being implemented in stages over the next 5 years.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this studio, students will be able to: - Demonstrate a capacity to make a new design to accommodate a traditional Asian object in Australian landscape. - Demonstrate awareness of how research contributes to design - Demonstrate an understanding of form, structure and setting as a form of design enquiry. Objectives: This studio design is research-based design. The studio requires documentation of the design process, the testing of theoretical or empirical propositions (case studies) and formulation of a design proposal. The final submission is a final design resolution which is the result of these processes. The studio offers opportunities for students to demonstrate an original approach to architectural design synthesis based on research and critical thinking. Students will be expected to demonstrate M. Arch CDE levels of design resolution, conceptual engagement and aesthetic expression. Teaching mode: Group work (Week 1 and 2): Site inventory and analysis including identifying characteristics, problems and potentials of the buildings and the site with analytical diagrams Studio activities and presentations (W 3-4, 6, 8-9) Individual meeting (Week 5, 7, 10-11)
