This studio will take part in the Student Ideas Competition “The Place of Transport- A Community’s Right To Its City” being held by the Australian Institute of Architects to look at what to do with the new urban spaces created under Skyrail, the current project to elevate large portions of the Caulfield to Dandenong railway line. The competition is open to all Victorian Architectural Students and offers prize money of $3000.

Studio Outline:

The studio will focus on the architectural, civic and urban design opportunities arising from the creation of new community spaces.

This studio will proceed in 2 stages:
*background research and  site analysis projects, to be done in groups worth 30% of total marks.
*individual design responses worth 60% of total marks.
*Participation, worth 10 % of marks.
*Talks by outside experts will b e part of the studio.

Studio Leaders

PETER HOGG is the principal of PH Architects and studied Urban Design at Masters level at RMIT in the early 1990s. He has an ongoing involvement with community groups with a focus on urban design and urban planning. Peter has taught design at Melbourne University for the past 14 years, and lectures in Architectural History and Urban and Community Planning in the new Bachelor of the Built Environment course at Melbourne Polytechnic.

Learning Outcomes:

* Resolved proposal about the site which engages with public space, community needs and the urban context.
*A proposition about urban space and the role of architecture.
*Design excellence.
