Studio H: Housing
Affordable Housing in Moonee Ponds
Kate Raynor
Housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable in Melbourne, resulting in significant repercussions for equity, livability, financial stability, environmental sustainability and social cohesion in the world’s “most livable city” (The Economist, 2016). Despite this, strategies to increase affordable housing often meet with political, financial and legal barriers.
In this studio, you will work closely with Moonee Valley City Council to overcome barriers and identify opportunities to support affordable housing on the contentious Moonee Valley Racecourse Development.
The studio will provide opportunites to engage in discussions about the entire housing continuum in Victoria. It will also investigate strategies like value capture, inclusionary zoning, tax increment financing, institutional investment, innovative construction techniques and deliberative development opportunities.
The studio will offer students opportunities to work with developers, planners and designers with an interest in the Moonee Valley Racecourse Development site and to gain a better understanding of effective housing policy.
