Studio 42

Beyond Narrative

John Gatip and Lucas Koleits

Studio Description

Beyond Narrative will explore the process of architectural design through storytelling. The studio will treat fiction as a tool to investigate the consequences of the past and the emerging futures, questioning the realities of the present. Each project will be developed through the lens of each student’s unique narrative built around their choice of site.

The studio will interrogate the typology of the ‘archive’ as a conceptual departure point. From there the concept, design development and mode of representation will be driven using narrative. The studio encourages the collision of disciplinary boundaries where it interrogates the process of producing architecture.

Tell us a story that is shaped by your architecture.

Studio Outcome

Each student is expected to build their own unique environment using narrative to form their architecture. The process will be grounded on research and refined through a rigorous process of design and storyboarding. Students are expected to create their own story using their understanding of site and how their brief and study of the archive occupy it. They will also interrogate the interaction of archive’s user with their site through the development of their fiction, in turn, informing their spatial design.

Their research of site and the typology of the ‘archive’ will be critical in the finalisation of their project and their mode of representation (drawing, physical modelling, animation etc). This studio expects students to develop strong visual, textual and verbal communication skills that in turn will feed into their own professional practice.

Studio Leaders

He is currently working as a graduate at Buro Architects where he specialises in small to medium scale residential projects. He has also worked at Hayball Architects where he focused on educational architecture. Lucas takes a multidisciplinary approach to architectural design, drawing on a broad experience of research and design skills. Lucas has also been published both locally and international for his works in the field of science and architecture.

John Gatip is an architect with a Masters of Architecture degree from Melbourne School of Design. He is currently working at Inarc Architects with a strong focus on residential and heritage architecture. His work spans from architectural practice to sculpture, art installations, publication and exhibitions. He is also involved in a multi-disciplinary group called anon. where they explore the design possibilities of architecture and music through spatial installations.
