Summer 2018 Studio 10

CDE Studio 10: TRAUMA

Dominik HOLZER

STUDIO OUTLINE

What would be the ideal context for recovery for stroke-patients who have experienced severe trauma and need to re-connect their body with their (built) environment? What is the role of architecture in assisting stroke-patients to recover and maintain/regain their self-worth? How can healing get consolidated with the (functional) needs to offer the best possible environment for those providing care? This Studio will address how to advance design based on research about the psychological and physical effects of architecture on healing & recovery.

STUDIO LEADER

Dominik Holzer is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Architectural Design at the University of Melbourne. Dominik completed a Masters and PhD degree at RMIT; his interests center around understanding how parametric and other rule-based techniques can assist the architectural design process. Next to his role in academia, Dominik consults on various Design Technology related matters in practice.

STUDIO OUTCOMES

Students will learn how to translate research outcomes into a tangible architectural proposition. Based on the bespoke topic of ‘Trauma’ students will grasp the cognitive & functional requirements associated to healing and recovery of stroke patients. They will research how spatiality, materiality, orientation, light, sound and other environmental factors influence the recovery of body and mind.

PROCESS

We will run the intensive in true ‘studio’ fashion. This means that you are expected to take over our dedicated studio space and that you are generally present during the 6 week intensive. The semester will kick off with group research about Trauma and its effects on the human body and psyche. In this period, external guests will join class to talk about the effects Trauma patients associate to their immediate built surrounding. Students will then work individually using digital and physical means to conceptualising and advance their ideas.

PREREQUISITES

  • A curious and open mind
