Summer 2018 Studio 19

CDE Studio 19: .IMG.ING - SCANS AND SLICES

Ben WATERS

STUDIO OUTLINE

‘.IMG.ING - Scans and Slices’ is a research and design unit that introduces students to critical views on new mediums for architectural processing through the observation and production of 3D scans.

The process of working in this studio will be focused on developing skills and knowledge in reality
capture technology, specifically 3D scanning and photography. Using these mediums as a lens to
critically observe objects and spaces, students will develop skills in image making, digital scanning and point cloud analytics, 3D printing processes and curatorial practices.

Students will be analysing and dissecting spaces and structures around the Melbourne School of Design. Acting much like surgeons, students will scan spaces, then operate on the digital scan data,
slicing open the structures to observe its make-up.  Through a series of short design exercises, these structures will be transformed, 3D printed, photographed and 3D scanned again. These exercises aim to develop skills in the associated mediums, and critical views on image making and reality capture technology.

The second half of the term involves the proposal and articulation of altered and adapted spaces around the School of Design. These spaces will be both physical and digital. A key outcome of the studio will be the presentation and exhibition of the proposals on location within the scan site.

STUDIO OUTCOMES

Locations within the School of Design will be identified as sites for student projects. Final presentations will be held within these sites, displaying and articulating final proposals of alterations and additions to the school, using both physical and digital material. Students will present imaging systems developed, 3D printed material and augmented reality projections.

STUDIO LEADER

Ben WATERS is principal at OSK Architects and founder of SIII research lab. He graduated with a Master of Architecture from RMIT University, and studied at Parsons School of Design, New York. In 2014, Ben was awarded a residency position at Berlin’s Centre for Art and Urbanistics (ZKU). He has taught masters design studios at MSD since 2015.
