Summer 2018 Studio 26

CDE Studio 26: THE VIRTUAL HOUSE

Colby VEXLER and Pricilla HEUNG

STUDIO OUTLINE

Has the contemporary context tainted our perception of the “virtual?” From digital aesthetics to the simulation technologies of “virtual realities” architectural discourse and practice have become too caught up in the representation of the “real” virtuality - rather than the notion of virtuality itself.

This studio will revisit Architecture New York’s (ANY) publication 19 + 20 - “The Virtual House” competition. Part research, part design, part competition this studio seeks to critique and extend the ideas of the original competition within the contemporary context of 2018. Here, students will explore the rich spatial potentials derivative of the notions - The Virtual and The Real.

Through the programmatic context of a house, students will embark on process of investigating the terms virtuality and reality, their a/effects upon architecture and more broadly, what this may mean for living today.

Via the investigation of aesthetic, cultural, technological and social conditions, the studio will focus on the unexpected; the disintegration of the immaterial (ideas) into the material (outcome) through the slippages, transition and tension between the virtual and the real.

The house produced will act as an agent for mediating, critiquing and navigating the connections between the virtual and the real via the deployment of ideas, content(s), user and space. Here we hope to unpack what it means to live today - both virtually and within the real.

This studio will involve a number of workshops, readings and lectures from philosophers, writers, architects and artists.
