Studio 13

1:1

Peter Cole

Studio Description

1:1 studio will approach the design of a house by investigating the components that constitute the house as a whole, or as a system of parts.

The design process will follow a prescriptive path, focusing in detail upon individual materials and their place within a structural system.

As more components enter the dialogue of the design process, students will be required to discuss their work in the context of an aligned critical theory.

Sites will be chosen individually, most likely based on the students familiarity and comprehension of the location, but potentially for other reasons if a strategic agenda is proposed.

Studio Outcomes

The studio will work toward a resolved design of a residence, while concurrently questioning the definition of the term residence (habitat, shelter, house, dwelling).

Design resolution in this instance will range between micro / macro (eg: fixtures + furniture / landscape).

Students must be willing to produce models at 1:1, and must be resourceful in finding, investigating and working with real construction materials.

Documentation of process work and written critical reflection will be recorded in a folio that will commence in week 1 and continue throughout semester.

The studio will be informed by visitation from architectural and art practitioners at various points.
