Studio 8

Urban Collectiv(ity)

Andrew Milward-Bason

Studio Description

Our Australian cities are growing rapidly and we are becoming an increasingly urbanised society. As we do so, we can either intensify our urban environment or spread out further.

But if we are to intensify, the question is how?

Greater density is a driver for a host of critical outcomes and opportunities for Australian cities - the challenge is about getting the balance right. It is about providing a scale that invites community and in which we feel connected to each other and to the natural, a diversity and amenity that enhances our environment and facilitates a range of occupancy types, tenures, households, ages and mobility, and a flexibility which can cope with change, particularly around live / work models. However there are limited options in the market that offer a genuine and conscious approach to create resilient communities.

This studio aims to explore how greater density, community, sustainability, and affordability may be mutually reinforcing, using a real site in parallel with an actual project.

Studio Outcomes

This thesis studio will begin by facilitating research into a range of dimensions that inform urban intensification - cooperative partnership models, communal living models, sustainable outcomes, housing typologies, intergenerational living and ageing in place, health / economic / social outcomes. It is anticipated that each student will pursue their own focus on these different aspects and then share their learnings with the group. This is a real world site, and there will be a component of group-based site investigation and analysis. The research and site analysis will underpin design proposals for a multi-dwelling community on site, potentially accompanied by other supporting uses. The studio will parallel a real project for the subject site and students will have the opportunity to engage with the project team to inform the thinking behind students’ proposals and enhance learning opportunities. Presentation format will include 2D material and a model set into a collaboratively produced context model.
