Studio Description

STUDIO AIMS: The studio will explore design processes for generating architectural form and space to include conceptual ideas which manifest in the final architectural experience.

PROJECT: NGV_C: NGV Contemporary will be a landmark gallery that celebrates the central role of art and design in contemporary life and culture. With more than 10,000 square metres of exhibition space, it will be the largest museum of contemporary art and design in Australia. Located in the heart of the re-imagined Melbourne Arts Precinct.

The students shall visit and analyze different gallery models and explore how these affect the display and reception of artwork.

Students will be designing the gallery including exhibition spaces, performance areas, video art projection spaces, art storage workshops, administration, gallery shops, cafés / restaurants, with public areas which connect to the promenade designed by So-Il (USA) which runs towards the Spire and City

  • A unique new 18,000 square metre immersive public garden in the heart of the precinct, including space for outdoor art and performances
  • NGV Contemporary, a new gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design – set to be the largest of its kind in Australia
  • New connections and improved access into and through the precinct
  • Underground shared services that will ensure the seamless and sustainable operations of the precinct and its venues

Studio Outcomes

The students shall develop a sound understanding of different spatial and graphic techniques designers adopt and how these may communicate ideas and concepts through architectural design. These studies shall be fostered and developed by each student after conducting site and program investigations in order to establish a particular design process. The studio shall work in class through class discussions, lectures, and exercises adopting different medium which shall include: Research, mapping exercises, and various model making exercises (physical and digital -Rhino etc). All activities shall be work towards a final professional Reflective journal documenting the semester’s work including a final verbal presentation and graphic layout which will include a written design statement, appropriate drawings, renders, animated GIF and fly through.

Studio Leaders

Anna Nervegna –Co Director - Nervegna Reed Architecture, a design office motivated by ideas, brought together through extensive experience from the fields of architecture, academia, film and the arts. We are dedicated in exploring the contemporary condition in the urban environment through programmatic, context, social and cultural means. Our architecture has been widely published and includes projects in Australia and China. In addition to their commitment to higher education. Nervegna Reed also works at the intersection of architecture, media and art such as their 2021 film screening for the @Mpavilion.
