Copyrighting and referencing advice for your digital gallery page
It is important to remember that we are not able to rely on the usual copyright provisions that apply to the use of third-party copyright (e.g. photographs, maps and other visual media) in an educational context for the online exhibition. As such, selection of the images that are chosen to be included in the online exhibition must be done carefully.
If at all possible, original student works are the best option for your online exhibition. It is important to ensure that the work is an original work, not a derivative work created from material created by third parties.
In order to assist with making sure your online exhibition is copyright compliant:
- Watch the video ‘Working with Images and Copyright’ on this page of the ABP study and research guide
- You'll need to reference any third-party images. If further referencing guidance is needed, please contact the Library: https://library.unimelb.edu.au/architecture#contact
- Refer to the ABP study and research guide to look at referencing https://unimelb.libguides.com/abp/referencingThe two recommended referencing styles (APA and Chicago) don’t cover all of the resources types you might include, so library staff have had to provide exemplars which cover images, maps, annotated maps, online maps, social media photos, ABS data, etc.
SETTING UP YOUR EXHIBITION IN THE BUILDING
Be safe!
MSDx Summer exhibition display set-up is a big task! Please be mindful of people in the building and take all necessary precautions to minimise any risks.
Your Studio Leaders have completed a Risk Assessment and requested equipment they think you will need to use.
Note: Practice safe working environments, and ensure all access pathways are clear of hazards.
A really important note we want to share based on past installs - please do not stand on any furniture. Ladders will be supplied. Please ask roving staff if you are having trouble locating a ladder.

MSDx Equipment kits will be distributed on all floors by the elevator, the Makerspace on Ground floor and B117 foyer area. All equipment must be returned after use. Please use equipment safely - if you're not sure how to use a piece of equipment, ask a staff member.
We supply studio rooms with:
- Push Pins
- Blue Tac
- Magnets
Dedicated kits will be distributed at each level. They will be equipped with:
- Extra Push Pins
- Step Ladder
- Scissors
- Measuring Tape
- Spirit Level
- Masking Tape
- Ziploc Bags
Other general tools to be provided upon request (i.e., power boards, extension leads, hammers, mallets, laser measures).
Note: If you plan to exhibit heavy items (>10kg), suspend work or construction builds, you MUST contact MSD Exhibitions to discuss installation.
Sensitive display areas
Atrium Perforated Walls – Please only secure works/prints with T-pins or Push pins provided.
Please don't use Screws, Tape, Glue gun, Double-sided Tape Velcro, or Blu Tac, as these will cause damage to the surfaces.
Concrete Finish Walls (B1, B2) - Blu Tac will stain the walls and cause permanent scarring. Please ask staff for assistance if you wish to display on the concrete walls.
SUSTAINABLE EXHIBITION PRACTICES
At the exhIbition launch
As part of the MSD Green Impact sustainable event and exhibition practices we will be serving most of our drinks in cans. If you are a wine drinker we will be encouraging you to bring along your own cup to help us cut down on single plastic usage.
After the exhibition
We repurpose posters that are not collected by students at the end of the exhibition. For example, we donate posters to various kindergartens within the community for craft activities. If you are not comfortable with your work being donated please let us know and we will earmark their work for the recycling bin.
- If you have any feedback or ideas, welcome to email us at MSD Exhibitions
