Special consideration
If you experience circumstances which significantly affect your ability to meet your academic requirements, you can apply for special consideration. There are two types available, and it’s important to understand which is right for you.

Leave of absence
If you wish to take time off from the course you're currently enrolled in, you may be able to apply for a leave of absence.

Advanced standing
To seek credit from subjects you have previously completed at another institution you can apply for advanced standing (credit).

Overloading

MSD Studios
Information about current studio offerings for students enrolled in the Master of Architecture, Master of Landscape Architecture, Master of Urban Design or Master of Urban Planning.

Quota Subjects
A number of subjects offered by the University are termed 'quota subjects' or 'quota restricted subjects'. These are usually workshops or subjects with a travel component where the capacity for large enrolment is limited by available resources such as workshop space, machinery and accommodation as well as because of the mode of teaching.

Travelling Studios
Melbourne School of Design Travelling studios are 'working laboratories' for design thought and production and involve the exploration of complex, real-life issues. Exposure to unfamiliar cultures, places and people will stimulate your ability to think creatively and problem-solve.

Internships and Vocational Placements
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) subjects are designed to provide students with professional experience in an area related to their field of study or the career they are working towards. The aim of providing industry-specific opportunities is to enable you to develop skills that will enhance your prospects of gaining meaningful employment and building your career for the future.

Cross-institutional Study
If you are interested in undertaking a subject that isn’t offered at the University of Melbourne, it may be possible for you to complete this subject at another university and have it count toward your current degree. This is known as cross-institutional study.
